Police officers have a goal to protect every innocent human being. Very often, it is quite complicated to do this, but it is necessary to do their best to accomplish this goal. Stop and frisk program was created in order to prevent crimes. In general, it means that when a police officer sees a suspicious person, he or she has a right to stop him/her, ask questions and check where he/she has a gun or contraband. From the first sight, it looks quite effective. However, it is quite a debatable question, because it is hard to understand whether stop and frisk program is more good or bad for the society. This program can be quite effective, which is also shown in practice. There are a great number of cases when polices officers stopped suspicious people and prevented crimes or found contraband. However, there is always a chance that a person is innocent, which make him/her feel him/herself quite uncomfortable. Yet, this wouldn’t be a serious problem, if this the police officers treated all people equally. Unfortunately, according to the statistics, the number of African American and Latin people stopped by the police is much higher than the number of white people. About 90% of all people stopped by the police officers are not white, and about 88% people are innocent. Racial discrimination is a result of this program. However, most of the police officers state that they do not do anything wrong. They explain their actions as a necessity. In most of the cases, the areas where people are stopped and asked questions are adverse. Unfortunately, exactly the people of color live in such areas. In other words, the police officers explain their actions as the right ones because they are done in the crime hot spots. Moreover, it is very hard to prove that the police officers do something wrong, because the law allows such actions. A lot of the police officers think that the stop and frisk program is quite effective at reducing the number of gun offenses and violent crimes. Yet, people who always become suspects don’t think like that. There is a great number of examples that can prove that this program has changed the lives of many people in a bad way. One of the brightest examples is handshaking. Teenagers that live in the adverse areas are afraid of handshaking. They do not do this because they know that any police officer can think that they have deals with the drugs. Isn’t it quite unfair? The other vivid example of the discrimination and bad effect of the stop and frisk program is that people are afraid to go outside. One teenager was stopped by the police about 200 times, however, he never did anything wrong. As a result, he feels uncomfortable outside, and have no desire to leave his home. Such attitude of the police changes people’s lives, and usually, these changes aren’t po sitive. Both, the people of color and white people, think that stop and frisk program isn’t a good idea when it comes to racial discrimination. The good effect it has can approve the harmful effect on the citizens of the country. A great number of people are afraid of the stop and frisk program and want to get rid of it in order to have a more calm life than they have now. Yet, it is possible to find a compromise. If to update the law in order to protect the innocent people, the situation will become better. It won’t fully solve the problem, but it will reduce the number of people who suffer from the stop and frisk program.

Seamus Heaneys Poetic Struggle with the Past - Literature Essay Samples

In his critically acclaimed collection North, contemporary Irish poet Seamus Heaney reveals a very personal side of himself and of his identity as a writer. Although each individual poem explores its own storyline and employs its own metaphors, one common thread seems to unravel throughout the collection: the past, particularly that of Ireland. And Heaney’s angst-ridden endeavor to recount this past, though perpetuated throughout the entire book, is especially lucid in the relationship between the two back-to-back poems â€Å"North† and â€Å"Trial Pieces.† Viewing these pieces as one consecutive development of theme rather than as two separate entities, Heaney’s readers are better able to grasp a fundamental constant in both his work and himself: a sense of obligation to preserve the past and a conflicting fear of misrepresenting or exploiting it. As the collection’s namesake, the poem â€Å"North† takes on the responsibility of establishing author’s purpose and encompassing the general mood of the book, which it accomplishes pretty successfully. The poem opens with the words, â€Å"I returned†¦,† immediately setting a precedent of memory and a desire to go back. Heaney proceeds to describe the present condition of his setting as â€Å"secular† and â€Å"unmagical† and acutely contrastive to those who had once been rich with life and glory (â€Å"those fabulous raiders/ those lying in Orkney and Dublin†). He expands on this idea by describing the rusting of their swordsthe swords embodying those he wishes to preserve and the rust implying their senescence. He begins, â€Å"It said, ‘Lie down/ in the word-hoard, burrow/ the coil and gleam/ of your furrowed brain.† This term â€Å"word-hoard† is conspicuously in reference to his own writing; his viewing it as a â€Å"hoard† indicates that he is perhaps ashamed of it in all its spontaneous, jumbled, and obsessive glory. But despite any personal shame, Heaney feels compelled by these voices to contemplate the value of language. Part I opens with Heaney examining an artifact, really any arbitrary bone or fossil, and getting drawn in by its captivating exterior (â€Å"trellis to conjure in/ Like a child’s tongue/ following the toils†). The first part ends ominously as this object begins â€Å"eluding the hand/ that fed it,† creating tension between the memory and the rememberer. Part II reveals that the object is what Heaney likes to call a â€Å"trial piece† and reiterates the enticement of its â€Å"foliage, bestiaries/ elaborate interlacings.† This trial piece, he says, must be â€Å"magnified on display.† The mention here of â€Å"display† is the poem’s first referral to an overarching theme of voy eurismyet another agent of tension between Heaney and his subject matter. In this instance of magnification, the viewer is an opportunist and the trial piece a victim of gratuitous scrutinya relationship which now represents the one between the poet and his poetic inspirations. In Parts II and III, he continues his exploration of the artifact and compares this exploration to reaching in â€Å"for shards of the vertebrae,† a physically dangerous task to parallel the risky ventures of writing. Part IV begins, â€Å"That enters my longhand/ turns cursive, unscarfing/ a zoomorphic wake/ a worm of thought,† creating a foray of newfound anxiety, characterized by thoughts flowing quickly and togetherly, similar to the way cursive letters would. And this anxiety only builds when Heaney compares himself to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, painting himself as a victim of doubt and indecision and morally ambiguous responsibilities. He goes on to say that he is a â€Å"skull-handler, parablist/ smeller of rot,† suggesting that his subjects can feel dangerous or unpleasant (i.e., metaphorical skulls and rot), and he concludes Part IV with â€Å"dithering, blathering,† an incoherent resolution to match his anxiety-stricken mind. The last stanza of the poem finally offers a visual to this notion of skull-handling as he details the way his words might â€Å"lick around/ cobbled quays† and tread cautiously â€Å"over the skull-capped ground.† For Seamus Heaney, the past is a ground of vertebrae, and his duty as a writer is to maneuver his way through it without shattering one.
